🎭 Summary

In an almost dystopian America, a brutal civil war threatens the very fabric of American society, as a totalitarian federal government struggles against secessionist opposition. Amid this chaos, war photographer Lee (Kirsten Dunst) puts together a band of journalists that includes the loyal Joel (Wagner Moura), eager newcomer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), and their insightful mentor Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson). Their goal is to travel from the New York City to the DC while interviewing the president (Nick Offerman) before the rebel army takes over the capital.

Their journey across America on the showdown between the south and the north takes them through various devastated cities and armed militias posing overwhelming threats to the vehicle and the people inside. However, every step they take serves as a harsh reminder of a nation that is terribly divided. Every day, Americans shoot at each other in cold blood, posing grave threats not only to the life of innocent civilians, but also to morals and ethics. While Lee tries to grab the raw truth by venturing with the group, the means of achieving this truth severely tests the endurance of the group.

Civil War brings to focus the human cost of conflict along with the frail nature of social order and structures as we know them. Alex Garland manages to weave together what feels like an anthology of cautionary tales and modern American society, begging the question- what happens to society when divisive politics has unchecked power?

The movie has earned praise for its engaging performances, most notably Dunst’s performance as Lee, and the unsparing portrait of a nation’s crumbling reality. Critics have observed its “gorgeously shot cautionary tale full of big ideas,” as well as the skill with which it makes one think without providing easy solutions.

Civil War can be streamed on HBO Max and is available for rent or purchase on several digital platforms.
